How bottled water supports healthy hydration

Recent research looks at how much water is required for healthy hydration and potential sources including bottled water.

Our body needs to keep relatively constant levels of water to maintain good health. Every day we lose water in various ways due to:

  • ambient temperature
  • exercise and physical activity
  • our health condition e.g. colds and fevers, illness, pregnancy, breast feeding
  • age and gender

Typically, an adult doing little or no exercise loses on average 2.5 litres of water per day in our climate (18-20˚C).

It's important to replace the lost fluid, ideally with healthy hydration. The research identified that on average 0.7 litres of water is found in food. Biochemical reactions in the body can provide an additional 0.3 litres of water. Drinking provides the main source with 1.5 litres per day.

Pure spring water is a great source of healthy hydration as it does not contain high levels of sugar and sweetners found in some other drinks which can lead to the consumption of excess calories.

When out of the home: travelling; at work; or at play, drinks can either not be readily available or expensive to buy. Installing a water dispenser or buying bottled water or small water bottles can help provide health hydration when and where you need it.
